Google is not only a search engine


When you now organize a street interview and ask people "What is Google", I assume more than 90 percent of the people answer that Google is a search engine. Indeed, Google is a search engine and it is probably its core business, but Google is much more!

Google Web Search Features
  • Besides the traditional Google search engines in different languages, there is also a local search engine available: Google Local. As Google Local is in beta, only US searches are possible. Are you living in Detroit and hungry and you want a taco, do a search on http://local.google.com and you get a list of all taco restaurants. 
  • Google Mobile : search with your cell phone online information. http://mobile.google.com 
  • Google Print puts book content right in the Google search results http://print.google.com 
  • Calculator: Type a mathematical _expression (e.g. 5+2*3) in the Google seach box and you get the result, even with complicated math!
  • Definitions: when you search for 'define Personal Computer', you get the definition of that word;
  • With Froogle, you can search for products (independent free service) http://froogle.google.com and http://labs.google.com/frooglewml.html (Froogle for your cell phone) 
  • With 'I'm Feeling Lucky' next to the Google search box you will see directly the first web page for your query. You will not see the other search results at all.
  • Movies: To find reviews and showtimes for movies playing near you, type 'movies', 'showtimes' or the name of a current film into the Google search box
  • With PhoneBook you can search for US business and residence phone numbers in the Google search box, e.g. 'John, Fitzgerald, Washington' 
  • Q&A answers (all) your questions in the Google search box, e.g. birthplace Bill Clinton 
  • You can get specialized information in the Google search box of parcels, patents or other specialized numbers.
  • Restrict your search to a specific site (Site Search), e.g. 'google site: www.wallies.info' for wallies.info pages with the word 'google'
  • Stock Quotes in the Google search box, e.g. GOOG for the Google stock quote
  • Weather conditions and a four-day forecast for a particular U.S. location, e.g. 'weather Miami, fl' in the Google Seach box; 
  • Travel information: To see delays and weather conditions at a particular airport, type the airport's three letter code followed by the word 'airport'; To check the status of a U.S. flight, type the name of the airline followed by the flight number. 
  • Google Alerts send you an email with the latest search results of your query. http://www.google.com/alerts 
  • With Google Catalogs you can search mail-order catalogs online. http://catalogs.google.com 
  • Search for images with Google Image Search http://images.google.com 
  • Google Scholar enables you to search specifically for scholarly literature. http://scholar.google.com 
  • Google special searches: http://www.google.com/unclesam ( U.S. Government), http://www.google.com/linux, http://www.google.com/bsd (BSD), http://www.google.com/mac.html (Apple Macintosh), http://www.google.com/microsoft.html

It has a bounce rate of about 33% (i.e., 33% of visits consist of only one pageview), and YouTube has been online since 2005. The site belongs to the “Video Sharing” category.


4. Yahoo!

Yahoo.com is ranked #4 in the world according to the three-month Alexa traffic rankings. While we estimate that 32% of visitors to the site come from the US, where it is ranked #4, it is also popular in Taiwan, where it is ranked #1. The time spent in a typical visit to the site is about nine minutes, with 42 seconds spent on each pageview. Roughly 32% of visits to the site consist of only one pageview (i.e., are bounces). Yahoo.com's content places it in the “Web Portals” category of sites


5. Baidu.com

Baidu.com is ranked #5 in the world according to the three-month Alexa traffic rankings. The time spent in a typical visit to the site is approximately fourteen minutes, with 34 seconds spent on each pageview. Compared with internet averages, the site appeals more to Asians; its visitors also tend to consist of moderately educated, childless women browsing from work and school who have incomes between $30,000 and $100,000. Baidu.com has been online for more than twelve years.

Wikipedia.org is ranked #6 in the world according to the three-month Alexa traffic rankings. The fraction of visits to the site referred by search engines is about 49%. The site belongs to the “Wikipedia” category. Compared with internet averages, Wikipedia's audience tends to be users who browse from school and work; it also appeals more to childless men under the age of 35 who have postgraduate educations. The site has been online for at least ten years.


7. Blogspot.com

Blogspot.com is the seventh most popular site in the world based on its three-month Alexa traffic rank, and visitors to the site view an average of 4.9 unique pages per day. Visitors to the site spend about six minutes per visit to the site and 47 seconds per pageview. Compared with internet averages, the site appeals more to users who browse from home and school; its visitors also tend to consist of women earning less than $30,000 who have postgraduate educations. While Blogspot.com is ranked #9 in the US, where about 18% of its visitors are located, it is also popular in Indonesia, where it is ranked #5


8. Windows Live (live.com)

There are seven sites with a better three-month global Alexa traffic rank than Live.com. The site has been online for more than sixteen years. Compared with the overall internet population, it appeals more to Hispanics; its audience also tends to consist of both uneducated and highly educated, childless women under the age of 35 who browse from home and school. The time spent in a typical visit to this site is about eight minutes, with 34 seconds spent on each pageview, and visitors to Live.com view an average of 6.2 unique pages per day.


9 Twitter.com

Twitter is the ninth most popular site in the world according to the three-month Alexa traffic rankings. The site has been online for more than eleven years. It has a bounce rate of roughly 38% (i.e., 38% of visits consist of only one pageview). Twitter's visitors view an average of 3.4 unique pages per day. Visitors to the site spend roughly seven minutes per visit to the site and 54 seconds per pageview.


10. QQ.com

China's largest and most used Internet service portal owned by Tencent, Inc founded in November, 1998. Presently, Tencent is aiming its operations at the strategic goal of providing users with a "one-stop online life service". Relative to the overall population of internet users, the site's users are disproportionately Caucasian, and they are disproportionately moderately educated, childless women earning over $30,000 who browse from home. Visitors to this site spend approximately 39 seconds on each pageview and a total of ten minutes on the site during each visit. Amazon.com has a bounce rate of approximately 26% (i.e., 26% of visits consist of only one pageview)
