Sony has announced the launch of a 3D visor. Reminiscent of virtual reality helmets, the Japanese electronics giant says that the HMZ-T1 is “really new and exciting, not just an upgrade of what’s gone before”.It claims it is “the world’s first 3D compatible Head Mounted Display”.
According to a recent statement from Sony, the “Personal 3D viewer” will be available in Japan as of November 11. Perhaps all the buzz around the device was just what the company needed to change its mind — who knows? What we do know is that the viewer, officially called the HMZ-T1, has gone through a few changes since we last saw it in Las Vegas.
Sony added a strap-style harness so that the device can be mounted on the noggin, leaving the hands free to operate a game controller or remote control or snatch a fistful of popcorn. Padding for the forehead is also new, but most of the original prototype’s features remain.
The device uses two 0.7” HD displays, using the latest organic LED technology, and also offers surround sound. Sony claims it simulates a 750” cinema. It can connect to Blu-ray, PlayStation 3 and other devices. Pricing and availability has not yet been confirmed.
